Variety reports that Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: New Moon shreaded past box office records for best opening day, with an unheard of $72.7 million yesterday at 4,024 theaters, stealing the title away from Warner Bros. The Dark Knight. Dark Knight had brought in $67.2 million from 4,366 runs over a year ago, on July 18, 2008, before a three-day opening weekend bringing in a total of $158.4 million. Pouring into the coffers for New Moon were the Friday midnight shows in 3,514 venues, which pulled a record-breaking $26.3 million. The opening day for New Moon doubled that of it's predacessor Twilight, which made $36 million on Friday a year ago, and had a three-day weekend total of $69.6 million, less than New Moon's first day!
